The Center Director role will begin full-time in January 2011.
Reporting Line: This is a full-time position reporting to the U.S. Program Dean based in
Chicago
Direct Reports: All local Delhi staff members, including positions in the areas of Student
Services, Housing, Academic Services, Finance and Administration.
General Overview:
The IES Delhi Center Director is the responsible head of the program, supervising the academic
program, providing the main point of contact with colleges and universities in Delhi and the IES
office in the U.S. The Director will supervise all staff members in Delhi and be responsible for
the health and safety conditions of IES students. The Director will represent IES Delhi at
various IES meetings, during visits to colleges and universities in the United States to speak
with study abroad coordinators and to recruit students, and at other national and international
meetings. The Director will also be responsible for developmental activities in Delhi, including
the development of an internship program and the arrangement of internship placements in
Indian and international businesses and NGOs, the development of a summer program outside
of Delhi, and other projects that involve the cultivation of a broad range of contacts in India.
IES seeks a Center Director who combines strong experience in administration and
management with strong academic credentials in a recognized academic discipline.
The Director should be familiar with the nature, organization, and customs of higher education
in both the United States and India, and demonstrated skill at collaborating with Indian and
U.S. institutions. The Center Director should have a strong commitment to academic rigor, to
educating people in an international environment, and to education for intercultural
competence.

Duties: |
Specific Duties
Maintaining optimal relations with academic institutions and seeking ways to develop the
mutual benefits of these relationships.
Maintaining good relations with the Society of IES in Delhi
Advising students on course enrollment at these academic institutions.
Hiring instructors to teach IES courses.
Evaluating and training faculty on teaching techniques and methods.
Representing the Center in India and in visits to colleges in the U.S.
Representing the Center with Indian academic institutions, businesses, and NGOs.
Preparing the annual budget with the help of the staff and in collaboration with the
Program Dean in Chicago. Exercising financial responsibility for the Centers
expenditures.
Participating in meetings with other Center Directors.
Developing and supervising experiential programs such as the internship and service
learning programs.
Organizing and conducting student orientation.
Being open and available to students to counsel them on academic and, when
appropriate, personal issues.
Enforcing student discipline when necessary.
Organizing and participating in Center events, including field trips.
Conducting a periodic assessment of health and safety conditions for the program.
Position Description
Developing and maintaining an emergency preparedness and response plan both for the
group and for individual students.
Providing emergency attention to students.
Acquiring and supervising housing.
Providing IES Chicago with information about the program and its development on a
regular basis, including, but not limited to, financial reports, promotional materials,
statistics about societal and labor trends in India, and cultural information.
Representing IES Abroad broadly in India and managing new business and academic
projects. |
Qualifications: |
Required Qualifications and Skills
Bilingual in Hindi and English
Candidates must be able legally work in India and must be able to demonstrate legal
working status in India upon request.
Experience with non-profits, academic institutions or corporations focused on education,
training and learning methods is highly desirable.
Terminal degree in a recognized academic discipline
At least 7 to 10 years administrative/management experience including general
management experience. Experience should include financial management, office
management, staff line management, HR/personnel management, contract management
and relationship development in a small to medium-sized operation.
An entrepreneurial temperament with an interest in expanding IESs presence in India as
the Indian economy grows and India becomes an increasing magnet for students from
the U.S.
Established track record of running operations in India in private or public sector with a
preference for experience in the higher education sector.
Demonstrated familiarity with Indian business practices and culture including the ability
to sub-contract local services and manage vendor relationships.
Living and working experience in the United States and in India and an understanding of
how to operate effectively in both countries.
Experience working with international organizations and US students is desirable.
Knowledgeable about Delhi, Indian culture, history, business, government, society and
geography.
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
Commitment to international education, intercultural issues, and a dedication to
students
