American Society for Tropical Medicine and Hygiene Executive Director

The American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene (ASTMH), founded in 1903, is a worldwide organization of scientists, clinicians, and program professionals whose mission is to promote global health through the prevention and control of infectious and other diseases that disproportionately afflict the global poor. Research, health care and education are the central activities of ASTMH members, whose work bridges basic laboratory research to international field work and clinics to countrywide programs.

ASTMH goals include:
* improving the health of people worldwide
* advancing research on tropical diseases
* fostering international scientific collaboration
* supporting career development in tropical medicine and global health
* educating medical professionals, policymakers and the public about tropical medicine and global health
* promoting science-based policy regarding tropical medicine and global health

ASTMH management services are provided through The Sherwood Group, a leading association management firm (AMC) located in Deerfield, Ill. The Sherwood Group is searching for a dynamic individual who will provide operational and strategic leadership for ASTMH as the organization’s full-time Executive Director (ED).

Although not a formal employee of ASTMH, the ED works in the Society's best interests in exercising his or her duties. The ED works without conflict of interest, with all the normal obligations of an executive employee.

The ED is responsible for ensuring that the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene serves the needs and interests of the ASTMH membership in keeping with the ASTMH bylaws and mission statement, and as directed by the ASTMH Executive Committee and Council.

Duties:

The duties of the ED include:

Association Operations: Supervising headquarters staff specialists, including those responsible for administration, accounting, membership, meeting planning and communications; Budgeting, audits, maintenance of records and contracts; development of policies; member recruitment and retention; support of board and committee meetings; support of courses and certificate exam’ support of annual scientific meeting; support of Journal operations; newsletter production and other Society communications; public relations; and support of government affairs and policy/advocacy activities. Additional activities to be undertaken on an ad hoc basis include fundraising, grant-writing and special presidential initiatives.

Communications / Public Spokesperson: The ED is the main point of contact between staff and ASTMH leaders and should facilitate communication among staff, leaders, and constituencies within the Society. At times, the ED may also serve as the public spokesperson for the Society.

Vision: The ED position calls for an individual with special skills including the ability to forecast growth opportunities, assess member needs, allocate resources, outline short- and long-range strategic goals, and develop measures by which to measure progress towards those goals. As these skills develop and yield results, the ED will naturally assume increasing responsibility and credibility both as a manager and a visible leader of the organization.

Requirements

* Success in this position requires a positive, results-oriented manager with excellent follow-through and detail orientation; the ability to identify and manage resources required to provide client services; impeccable organizational and governance skills; strong and persuasive communication skills; the ability to build and manage a cohesive, customer-focused staff team; ability to understand and connect the needs of heterogeneous organizations with clinical and research-oriented memberships, good technology skills; and an entrepreneurial streak.
* Minimum ten years experience as the executive director of a society or association, as a senior staff member/department head in a large organization, or managing a public health program.
* You must be well versed in all areas of association management, with a successful track record in fundraising, building internal consensus and supporting a board of directors, external coalitions and outreach programs. CAE preferred.
* You must have experience with public health program management or a public health affiliated agency, institution or organization.
