JOB SUMMARY
The City of Collinsville is seeking candidates for the position of Assistant Fire Chief. The Assistant Fire Chief reports directly to the Fire Chief. The City seeks an experienced professional with skills in planning, supervision, and staff development who is committed to community service, with outstanding leadership and administrative skills. |
Duties: |
Protect life and property in the City through assisting in direction of fire suppression, fire prevention, rescue, emergency medical services and activities.
Assists to plan, direct and administer operational fire suppression, fire inspection, prevention and investigation, rescue and emergency medical services, and training activities.
Helps supervise the administrative support and services necessary to the performance of the Departmental operations.
Coordinate activities with other municipal functions, as directed.
Represent the Department before the public and interested groups, as directed.
Helps command fire suppression, rescue and emergency medical activities at major fires and disasters; plans, directs and helps supervise operational activities; plans for the training and development of personnel; formulates operational policies, work methods and procedures in consultation with the Fire Chief.
Assists to enforce fire prevention and safety codes and ordinances through the supervision of the fire inspection and prevention program.
Helps direct inspection of buildings and grounds for actual or potential fire hazards and/or life safety; enforces all applicable local, state, and/or federal laws, rules, statutes, regulations, etc.
Prepares and presents the Departmental operating budget; plans, reports on immediate and long-range growth and expansion plans related to program, personnel, plant and equipment requirements; prepares capital improvement budgets, as directed.
Supervises, through subordinate staff, activities of the Fire Department.
Helps assign shifts and duties to staff; approve vacation another time off; evaluates work performance of immediate staff; assist in hiring clerical staff.
Schedules the maintenance and repair of fire apparatus, plant components and equipment; authorizes supply requisition; approves budgeted expenditures as directed.
Meets with public, planning, insurance and other groups to present and develop phases of the Departmental program; prepares and presents talks on Departmental work as directed.
Assists in investigating major fires and causes; performs arson investigation and prepares related reports; reviews and approves a summary report on fire inspections, investigation and prevention activities.

Qualifications: |
Preferred candidates should have a strong background in fire prevention codes and fire inspection. Must have a minimum of five years of proven leadership experience as Fire Officer or Fire Service Administrator. Must possess Fire Officer I Certification or have the ability to obtain. Graduation from an accredited college or university with an Associate’s Degree in Fire Science or related field is required; a Bachelors Degree is preferred.

Job location is the Collinsville Fire Department, Collinsville, Illinois. The work environment is outside and inside and includes emergency conditions.
